It could be time for a quick check of your old superannuation accounts, with a pot worth $2.2b sitting in Australian Taxation Office coffers waiting to be found.
There are 2.4 million unclaimed super accounts across Australia with an average of $950 in unclaimed money in each.
Canstar’s Steve Mickenbecker said it was common for people to lose track of their accounts, particularly small funds that have gone inactive.
“You’ve moved jobs, you’ve done all sorts of things and the super fund can’t find you either, so they transfer it to the ATO,” he said.
“It’s all at the ATO. It should be working for you.”
He said it was “a lot easier than people think” to reclaim the money.
“The thing is people know where they’ve lived, where they’ve worked (but) they don’t know where their super money is,” he said.
He said a quick visit to the myGov website would soon have any unclaimed super directed into your chosen account.
“(The ATO will) find it for you. You tell them what active super fund you want the money to go into,” he said.
